Sigh. This is sad, hard, and a bit choking me uppy. After being on blogger since it's inception as blogspot, I have finally called it quits.

I really love the idea of integration with flickr, picasa, in fact, MY WHOLE GOOGLE ACCOUNT! I like the IDEA of being all snug and cozy and integrated. It's nice. It's web 2.0...It's... safe.

But the last year has taught me the hard way what blogging pals like Matt Paradise and Bill Simmon and NTodd have been saying a long while ago- that pre-fab hosted blogging can suck. Alot. Blogger- also for it's improvements and so on, is not meeting my needs anymore.

Between server down and template hell and too many "blogger-modding" -hell experiences that are just annoying, I have decided that like old Bilbo, I must go on holiday.

Now don't fret. I won't burn this old house down. I will serve up the big fat "redirection" posts soon- this will stay up forever- a web version of an footprint.

UM. I really gotta stop drunk flickr-ing...

I realized this post needed clarification- YES i'm a PERV. YES, I regularly do things like drunk-searching for "boobs" on FLICKR. this search ...I did not count on this. crescenthead, amateur producer of pics and vids of floppy, buoyant and lactating breasts, is not your father(or mother's) prolific purveyor of passion. It's not that the videos & photos are that original or weird or perverted per se (unless of course you find lactation weird or perverted); It's just that they're odd.

The oddity comes from the juxtaposition of the closeups of jiggling,wiggling and acrobatically manipulated bosoms, in SLOW-MOTION(wtf?) with oddly cheerful and muzak-y soundtrack!

In the old days of tape bootlegging and trading this kind of thing would end up on some "mondo video" collection. Or maybe my friend Matt paradise's Public Access show, SUBTERRANEAN SINEMA (we shall miss you Matt). Anyways, what I like about Crescenthead's ouvre is that it has a kind of outsider art sincerity to it. A weird, peverted(yay perverts!!) sincerity- but sincerity nonetheless.

He brings up many good points about self publishing, web-based comics publishing, etc.

"... On the business side, there are a million great stories out there that aren't being told, because of a.)the high cost of breaking into the business of storytelling in mass media and b.) the high cost of producing and distributing those stories once you've broken in.My point being -- a lot of those great untold stories make the best sense told in a serialized nonstandard page length, with accompanying art. When I was working on Blue Beetle, the final two issues originally plotted out to 50 pages. A tight fifty pages. They had to fit into 44. Now, setting aside that it's always better to edit, we can still ask -- was the book better for losing those six pages of character and story? I don't know. But it seems damn silly to bend storytelling to a format sold almost exclusively in low-attendance, often creepy specialty shops scattered across the nation.

Will you get even the paltry tens of thousands of paying customers that
comics now get? I don't know. But without the publishing overhead, you
may not need that many. Let's put it this way -- stripping out
distribution costs and our share of the rent for those nice DC offices

AMAZON KINDLE FOR ECOMIC DISTRO?

I was checking out DONNA BARR's article on her blog on COMICTALK.COM, "Nobody Does It But Lulu", where she documents her awful experience with the (hopefully soon defunct) dissapointing blight on the fetal eComic/downloadables industry - WOWIO.COM(recently bought out by scandal-historied, PLATINUM COMICS). Barr writes,

" Sadly enough, my work with the download site Wowio did not pan out. The site stiffed Smashout Comics for several thousand dollars, and so Smashout couldn't pay me. This was not Smashout's fault. They can't pass on what they didn't get.
So far, the only dependable, cheap way to order downloads for my books has proven to be at Lulu. The prices are never above 96 cents for any download.
The update on downloadables:
Booksurge lost that ability several years ago.
Mobipocket is insanely complicated, and the downloads cost the customer as much as the hardbacks (what's up with THAT?).
Clickwheel and Magwheel have lots of enthusiasm, but they're not up and running yet, not really.
Wowio is unreliable and can't keep up payments.
I haven't tried loading comics on Amazon's Kindle yet. I'll have to get at that next. Maybe. I haven't even looked at their prices yet.
Sigh. The longer I spend working with distribution and getting it fixed for the future, the farther off goes my working on my books. ..."

So I decided to check out the KINDLE- and here's a handy video to describe its uses and so on. YES, I know- It IS hype. However- It may be one method of mass download/distro in a paperless eventual comics world we, as potential DIY comic creators are going to have to face down the road. I am intrigued. I am not "sold" on it. But it is food for thought.

Still really P.O.'ed about BT removing Al Jazeera... So I decided to write a contracted version of my previous blog post as a 250 word "letter to the editor". I realized too late that my previous missive was waaaay too long and edited it to fit Burlington Free Press and SEVENDAYS criteria for that sort of thing. I re- sent it to them as well as the comments section of BT's web site as well as Mayor Kiss. Let's hope this doesn't just blow over. I also wrote to the Islamic Center of VT;

To whom it may concern:

I myself am neither arab nor muslim, but am dissapointed and angry about the decision of Burlington Telecom
to remove Al Jazeera from its channel lineup. I refer you to the following article:

"Burlington Telecom to Dump Al Jazeera" in Local Matters By Ken Picard.

I was so upset about it that i have written letters to the editors of sevendays and Burlington Free Press.

my letter is as follows:

"Concerning Burlington Telecom removing AlJazeera from its channel lineup under the duress of Israel Center of Vermont and some subscribers- I find it infuriating that a special interest group and ANY amount of the public can dictate terms on the free transmission and circulation of ideas. No surprise that Israel Center of Vermont has a bias against Al Jazeera. Not surprising that BT GM Burns' has received "dozens" of complaints. It angers me that ICV's ignorance of basic constitutional rights/ethics/hate speech law and Chris Burns removing Al Jazeera from BT's lineup. Mr. Burns abdicated his authority to special interest groups and xenophobes that would bully and decide for our community what ideas we, the people, can be exposed to. My question to Chris Burns; what “DUST” kicks up, or business damaged, airing international news , whatever ideas they promote? Why wasn't Arab and Muslim citizens/groups not consulted? What if the Peace and Justice Center and "dozens" of people demand the removal of FOX NEWS for it's "hate speech propaganda"? This situation is ridiculous. Responding to ICofV's opinion that “hate speech”and “ ...undermine[s] the basic tenets of democracy.”- I guess they didn't pay attention in civics class. FREE SPEECH does not undermine the tenets of democracy, THE RESTRICTION OF IT DOES. We live in a country that promotes the free exchange of ideas. Except, apparently, ideas that The Israel Center of Vermont disagrees with or may hinder Chris Burns future BT business by stirring up “more dust.” "

I want you to understand that i do not consider myself a supporter of either side of the Arab/Israeli disputes, nor am i allied politically with any of the various sides of this regrettable struggle between cultures, politics and the bloodshed that has gone on for so long. I believe in peaceful and harmonius discourse- charity and non-violent means of making one's voice heard. But whether or not I believe Al jazeera's programming to be propaganda, truth, or not( I happen to believe it is infact news reportage from another point of view- nothing more or less)- it incenses me to no end that ANY particular group would attempt, by difference of politics, religion or xenophobia, to abridge the right of any other group to speak it's views, truth, facts, rhetoric or otherwise. The United States has a particular uniqueness in that we as citizens have a right to free speech. I am very supportive of this right, as it is in many ways the cornerstone of all our others here. If we can't say, write, transmit our thoughts- then how can we protect our life liberty and pursuit of happiness? How can we protect ourselves from oppression and oversight?

So understand, as a non-arab, non-muslim citizen- I DO NOT approve of the tactics and pressure tghat lead to such a bad decision on the part of Burlington Telecom. I hope your community can make demands for reconsideration of this situation as soon as possible. If your community loses its right to be informed, its right to its voice- then we all may soon enough. I wish you well.

I hope that they put some pressure on BT- I'm thinking of starting a petition. Is the ACLU out there? Anyone?? Maybe I'll foward all of this to them as well.

Defending AL JAZEERA, against the DIRTY DOZENS UPDATED

So I'm reading Seven days on line and caught this short article "Burlington Telecom to Dump Al Jazeera" in Local Matters By Ken Picard. In short, Paul Laffal and Jeffrey Kaufman, of the Israel Center of Vermont; a local Israeli activist group were quoted as saying that Al Jazeera's programming was:

“hate speech insidiously presented as news serves only to undermine the basic tenets of democracy.”

The article also states that according to Burlington Telecom, "dozens" of BT subscribers have complained/denounced the channel since BT started carrying AL Jazeera last year. That's right- since last YEAR, "dozens" of complaints. I'm pretty certain that misogyny-boosting comic strip, "The Lockhorns" gets more complaints at the Burlington Free press in a year, but I digress.

I was pretty flabbergasted at BT General Manager Chris Burns' reason for dropping the station from the lineup-

“We’re a small cable TV carrier in Burlington trying to acquire more business,” Burns said. “We really don’t need to stir up more dust.”

So, I wrote a letter to the editor at Seven Days-

Referring to "Burlington Telecom to Dump Al Jazeera; Local Matters By Ken Picard [05.07.08".

I'm not certain if this has been pointed out(if so, please disregard my redundancy) but in fact Al Jazeera(as well as Russia Today and Democracy Now) is available on Ch.16 RETN , A PEG programming station that serves VT communities from Essex down to Vergennes. So I suppose that this will serve those who receive the channel on BT a "loophole".

On to the meat of the matter, I find it really really troubling that a special interest group and ANY amount of the public can dictate terms on the transmission and circulation of ideas/news/speech. It is of no surprise to me that representatives of the Israel Center of Vermont would have a bias against the AlJazeera network and any of it's reportage or editorial opinions. It is not a surprise that BT General Manager Chris Burns' office has received "dozens" of complaints; one could have almost any controversial programming of any subject matter and experience the ire of dozens or more cable subscribers. What distresses me is both Israel Center of Vermont andBT GM Chris Burns' public reaction to Al Jazeera and it's programming.

It would appear that Mr. Laffal and Kaufman are of the opinion that Al Jazeera's programming constitutes “hate speech insidiously presented as news serves only to undermine the basic tenets of democracy." I wonder given the fact that the debate and bloodshed (as well as a great deal of goodwill and attempts at bridge building by pacifist groups on either side)between the Israelis and Palestinians in the middle east and the war of ideas, politics and propaganda by their representatives in the US, that we here in the United States, and more specifically, a progressive free-speech "don't tread on my liberties" state like Vermont would stay neutral in this debate and allow all parties to express their opinion with equal vigor, accuracy and rhetoric. Not so it seems in the case of BT General Manager Chris Burns. Apparently, Mr. Burns has the authority to tell those of us in the community - those who would pay the bill that allows the "little cable engine that could" - a shining municipal gem in the sky of big-business telecoms [to do business], what we, the people, can and cannot be exposed to.

All GM's and programming directors at cable TV companies make decisions on dropping and adding channels all the time- it's part of the business of cable TV However, the decision to drop or add programming is almost always an issue of bandwidth/channel limitations and cost effectiveness. According to an article published Saturday, April 21, 2007 by Burlington Free Press Staff Writer SamHemmingway, “...Burlington Telecom began offering Al Jazeera in its cable packages to customers six months ago. The two-year-old cable system does not pay anything for Al Jazeera and has a contract to provide it until 2011.” In addition, it has always been one of the selling points during BT's inception that we would have bandwidth and channel volume much higher than with conventional telecoms /cable providers in the past. So both of these scenarios do not have any bearing on Mr. Burns edict. No, in point of fact the only decision cited is “...trying to acquire more business...” and “We really don’t need to stir up more dust.” My question to Chris Burns would be, “Excuse me sir, but what business are you referring to that would be damaged by the free exchange of ideas? What DUST would be kicked up by providing international news services, no matter who they represent? I suppose that the Arab community of Burlington is not to be represented in this decision? ”

From this decision by Mr. Burns we are to assume then that an international cable news provider that is watched by Arab and non-Arab citizens worldwide with an opinion and op-ed slant contrary to the current US administration and the hard-line Israeli lobby is bad for business, therefore to be dropped from the channel lineup. Because the Israel Center of Vermont and "dozens" of subscribers disagree with said channel's programming or consider it hate speech. If that is the case, then as a card carrying liberal in a sea of the same here in theBT area(and , until now a gung-ho potential BT customer- now rethinking who i will give my money to)- I demand the removal of FOX NEWS for it's "hate speech propaganda"(my opinion)! No deal, Mr. Burns? Well how about if the Peace and Justice Center and "dozens" ofBT subscribers rally on the phone, email, etc? How about any other station that a special interest group and a phone bank wants off the lineup? Sound ridiculous? That's because it is.

The notion that any group and any MUNICIPAL employee can dictate what is and is not acceptable speech, particularly in the area of what is or is not news, information etc., is appalling, laughable and troubling, all at the same time. I suppose when an element of any extremity demands the removal of speech that they don't like we are just supposed to knuckle under to their demands and just terminate that point of view- abridge the flow of information that we, the citizens have the right to decide the validity of. As much as theICV and Mr. Burns would have the community think so- that is not and never will be (i hope) the current interpretation of the first amendment. It is also not a reasonable stance to take in lieu of the fact that at any given moment we are availed at every turn by groups and individuals in our communities with an axe to grind; "the truth" to reveal, and will rally to expose or squash the purveyors of whatever "they" don't agree with.

I sincerely hope that the citizens served by BT will call/email Mr. Burns and inform him of their opinions on the matter; I've a suspicion that more than dozens feel that an abridgment of their access to information is not in their best interests. At least I hope so.

I will leave you with the following quote from the Burlington Telecom's "About Burlington Telecom" web page (http://www.burlingtontelecom.net/aboutus/):

“... Although we are a City Department, this network is privately financed and clean of any taxpayer contributions. To pay for the effort, Burlington Telecom will provide the three basic services itself: cable TV, telephone, and high-speed Internet. But anyone else will also be free to use the network to deliver these or other services. (This is similar to a City providing public roads while also providing basic bus service as well. Citizens and businesses can use the bus service or they can use the roads to provide their own transportation.)"

“...But anyone else will also be free to use the network to deliver these or other services." Except of course anyone that The Israel Center of Vermont disagrees with or is going to inconvenience Mr. Burns future BT business campaign by stirring up “more dust.”

That about sums up my opinion. except I forgot to counter the ICofV's opinion that “hate speech insidiously presented as news serves only to undermine the basic tenets of democracy.” Well, I guess they didn't pay attention in civics class. In point of fact, FREE SPEECH does not undermine the tenets of democracy, THE RESTRICTION OF IT DOES.

STEALING THE BELLY-FLOWER IN THE LIGHT OF THE FUTURE

Haruku/i Shimada exploded out the door of the Bank Du Japon- his breath was like the panting of dogs chasing the rabbit at a dog race. But in truth he wasn't the dog- he was the rabbit. Several security guards and Parisian Gendarmes pursued him with earnest. The potted plant in his arms was large; the size of a canister vacuum from the 60s; or an oversized vase. Clumps of dirt and wood chips jumped out of the pot and litter the pavement. The plant- a tiny palm tree sapling the size of a pear was hastily shoved into the pot by Haruku as he ran from the bank- the original plant- some unfashionable and ugly office fern- was ripped out by Haruku to make room for his tiny possession. He. pressed on with an intensity that was normally not his way. Haruku/i was a transgender-designated androgynous-fashion editor for a Akihabara Newsite called YESYOU.JP -a portal to trend obsession, famous people and gadgets- Haruku/i was a self-admitted lazy coward and prided “him-self” on not caring much at all for anything difficult or important. Parties, cellphone-of-the-week, fashionistas and drugs were “his” life. All that changed- she thought. All that was over.

S/he had the quality of desperation that you would associate with people beneath s/his stature. Addict-thieves, or the insane. Or those American women who kidnap and steal children from pregnant women's bellies. Haruku/i read on the Manichi report that the way these insane American women do it is to kidnap some suburban pregnant mother at a shopping center or supermarket and without anesthesia- cut the baby from the mother's belly. These in-utero baby-nappers then run off – bloody newborns in there arms; swaddled in whatever can be found- like a black leaf and lawn bag or even some freshly purchased percale towel from Bed Bath and Beyond. That was what Haruku/i Shimada imagined he looked like, running around the corner from the Bank Du Japon in downtown Paris at 1 P.M., like one of those crazy women who had just cut a fetus from it's mother and dashed off, police in short pursuit. He imagined the potted plant soaked in blood and amniotic fluid; trailing a tooth-cut umbilicus- slipping on the mess as he ran in his 237,000YEN Perseus Kamchatka lambskin espadrilles. Haruku imagined the onlookers as intrigued, aghast, dumbstruck- which was the case- sliding on birth-gore as he ran in the Perseus Kamchatka's- shoes that he stole two days ago, because he couldn't allow himself to part with them at the boutique on Rue San du Blanc. He couldn't afford them on his fashion editor wages- but as Kiku said so many times to him on their “shopping sessions”, “...if God didn't want us to be a kleptomaniacs, then he wouldn't have made expensive shoes, darling, WE DON'T PAY...”. The blood and birth sac bounced up in the air then underfoot splashing and she skidded to the left, as he ran. That was because it wasn't his imagination; the emergency-potted, prized Encephalartos woodii, probably one of the rarest plants in the world- was cut from the belly of Haruku/i's target; his “client”; he cut it from the belly of a sumo wrestling, fat-fetish internet pornstar named La LUNA, aka. Ikumi Sakamoto under her understandably loud protestations in the ladies room of the Bank de Japon's Safety Deposit Box vault.

Because the plant was soaked in blood and amniotic fluid; trailing a tooth-cut umbilicus; he was to say the least, easily found in the teeming masses of Paris' business district. WHERE THE HELL IS ROY'S VAN?!, s/he thought, grabbing the Pharos 3470 HTC GPS phone from a fashionable and super-convenient jacket cellphone pocket, find me-find-me-find me!

As you may or may not know, Bronze-age comics writer, Steve Gerber- creator of "Howard the Duck", "Omega the Unknown", "Nevada", "Foolkiller" and "Thundarr the Barbarian"; writer of "Son of Satan"," Morbius the Living Vampire" ,"Lilith, Daughter of Dracula", "The Defenders", "Man-Thing", Tales of the Zombie and many others, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008 in Las Vegas. It's been said by much smarter men than myself (Jules Feiffer and Gerard Jones being but two) that Judaism is perhaps the real secret identity at the heart of the superhero experience--one doesn't have to look much farther than Lieber and Kurtzberg, who built Marvel comics under the pen names of Lee and Kirby, to make a case for it. Of all the many things I've thought about Steve Gerber--and believe me, I've thought about him a lot since learning of his passing earlier today--what sticks with me is that Gerber was the hero without the mask, the guy brave enough to forego the secret identity. I grew up in whiter-than-white Humboldt County and even I could tell that Gerber was Jewish: his stories were always of outsiders (outsiders even by Marvel's standards) and usually focused on defiant, frequently angry, guys who viewed with both bemusement and amusement the world surrounding them. By the time I got to high school and started reading Malamud (a little), Bellow (embarrassingly less), and Roth (a whole shitload), I could see how Gerber and his work belonged as much to their tradition--that of the soulful shit-stirrer--as to Stan's patented mix of soap opera and winking carnival barker. The term "patented" is almost more than cliched hyperbole, by the way. What makes eulogizing Gerber difficult--and it will be even more difficult when other writers of his generation pass on--is that his most substantial work was done while stylistically imitating someone else. Every writer passing through Marvel in the '70s had to write in Stan's house style and now that styles and mainstream tastes have finally progressed, I find it's a bit of tough sell to convince younger readers--and more than occasionally myself--that there's good writing buried underneath all the labored rhetoric, and the expository diatribes and the "Dear God, no!" melodramas, and those last panel captions that read, "And somewhere, in the distance, comes the gentle weeping...of a clown." One of Gerber's achievements--and I'm not sure if someone who doesn't know the period can really appreciate what a strange achievement it is--was to develop his own voice while immersed within that of another: within the Stanisms were the Gerberisms, the things you found only in Gerber's work, that held their own spell, bdspoke their own worldview. Cults popped up regularly in Gerber's work; so did supporting characters who would get fed up and leave the story; plots would expand out and then suddenly collapse in. The rich tapesty of the multiverse would unfold but always in the periphery: in the Florida everglades, in the park on a quiet day, over the Cuyahoga River burning at midnight. And at these places, you'd find an angry but decent guy--Richard Rory or Jack Norris or Howard the Duck--aware of his relative powerlessness, frustrated and bitterly amused at that powerlessness. As I said, I recognized that guy in Bellow's Tommy Wilhelm, in Roth's Portnoy and Zuckerman. (With Wilhelm, the recognition was semi-literal: when I read Seize the Day for the first time, my mental picture of Tommy Wilhelm was Colan's interpretation of Howard the Duck as a human man.) Another Gerberism was the keystone for the idea of superhero as Jewish myth: Superman. At Marvel, Gerber created Wundarr the Aquarian, the superhero who is rocketed to Earth from a dying planet--except Wundarr arrives on Earth full-grown, with the intelligence of a child. With Mary Skrenes, Gerber created Omega The Unknown, a character that riffs equally on Superman and Captain Marvel--Omega is a hero come to Earth with a strange bond to a boy orphan. Later, Gerber went on to do several offbeat Superman projects. My favorite was the final issue of DC Presents where Gerber packed his entire pitch for Superman into one baffling Hail Mary: an insane Mr. Mxyzptlk destroys Argo City such that Metropolis is layered with a fine mist of kryptonite, and Superman, his power reduced, must live in pain and discomfort whenever he's Clark Kent, treading over the kryptonite impacted sidewalks of the city. In fact, at the heart of Gerber's best work is Superman and Clark Kent: the powerlessness lurking in the heart of the powerful and, equally as important, the power lurking in the heart of the powerless. (After all, it's usually Rory and Norris and Howard who are the tipping point in the battle between good and evil.) Such paradoxes transcended the two scoops of ego gratification and bathetic male self-pity served up in the work of Stan Lee and most of his successors. While far from immune to such weaknesses (Gerber's worst work is like reading Harlan Ellison at his most histrionic), the duality of power-in-powerlessness and powerlessness-in-power which Gerber returned to thematically was a genuine belief in the world, founded on the way he saw it work: cults and corporations collapsed under their own weight; the little guy, though screwed, could still wrest victory from the jaws of defeat if he just kept at it. I could type another ten thousand words and not get at the power of these and other achievements. (I didn't even start in on that awesome Daredevil storyline where the villain is an intelligent malevolent baboon whose pheromones make every woman his slave and who slugs it out with our hero on the roof of the White House, to say nothing of Starhawk, the first transgender superhero, Angarr The Screamer, the showgirl and the ostrich, KISS, Doctor Bong, etc., etc.) But what I should say is, Steve Gerber kept at it. He kept at it after Cat Yronwode (I believe) wrote an editorial about how his work no longer moved her; he kept at it after Jim Shooter cruelly (and inelegantly) mocked him in the first issue of Secret Wars II; he kept at it after Nevada was unceremoniously dumped, after Hard Time was canceled, after Marvel published Lethem's Omega The Unknown miniseries over Gerber's initial objections. Steve Gerber kept at it six days before he died, working in the middle of the night working on his current assignment, Doctor Fate. I'd like to believe in an afterlife, and Steve Gerber is there, keeping at it, seeing his stories end the way he wanted them to, when he wanted them to. If such an afterlife exists, it would be a world Gerber never spent much time considering, a world he never made--which would bring him, I hope, both bemusement and amusement, even if it meant he was finally the angry outsider no longer. Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.

"hollywoodreporter.com February 12, 2008 - Today's The Hollywood Reporter indicates that 20th Century Fox has thrown the first punch in a legal dust-up with Warner Bros. over the rights to the 'Watchmen' movie. Fox claims exclusive copyrights and contract rights to the movie, a claim stemming from a tangled chain of rights transfers dating back to 1986, when the studio apparently obtained all film rights to Alan Moore's groundbreaking mini-series.

Quoting The Reporter article by Leslie Simmons directly:

'Fox claims that between 1986 and 1990, it acquired all movie rights to the 12-issue DC Comics series and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm. In 1991, Fox assigned some rights via a quitclaim to Largo International with the understanding that the studio held exclusive rights to distribute the first motion picture based on "Watchmen," according to the lawsuit. When Largo dismantled, the rights were transferred to producer Lawrence Gordon. Under a "turnaround agreement" between Fox and Gordon, the producer agreed to pay a buy-out price to Fox if he entered into any agreement with another studio or third party to develop or produce "Watchmen," among other things. The project apparently bounced around to Universal and Paramount before returning to Warners. Now, Fox claims that neither Gordon nor Warners has paid the buy-out price or advised the studio of any other conditions required under the agreement, including procedures necessary to acquire the rights to "Watchmen" from Fox. '

As 'Watchmen' has been in development for some time now, readers may be wondering why Fox waited until principal photography was largely wrapped to assert their rights. One reason might be to increase pressure on Warner Bros. With so much time and money invested on 'Watchmen' so far, it would be impossible for Warner to simply scuttle the project, something they may have been inclined to do had the lawsuit come before production start. Now the studio is "all in" and more likely to strike a deal in order to protect their investment. Fox's suit seeks to prevent Warner from moving forward, but odds are the film will proceed unabated as deals are made and settlements reached. ..."

" Talk about motion capture! It takes the Clutch Cargo/Syncho Vox concept to a whole new level. Director Peter Avanzino (Futurama) found this test clip (circa 1962) posted by Something Weird Video on YouTube. Pete thinks this technique might be good for a Beowulf remake.

The clip is credited to Leon H. Maurer, who has quite an impressive resume, and is apparently related to Norman Maurer (comic book artist, film director, Moe Howard’s son-in-law), who used a similar process (called “Cinemagic”) in his 1960 feature film, The Angry Red Planet. In 1955 Leon started Illustrated Films, Inc. (with Norman) and they co-invented Artiscope, a “full animation-by-automation” system (per Leon’s resume, “Realistic character animation without artists - world’s first practical “real-time motion capture” system”). If anyone can shed any further light on this technique, please let us know. "

Before SIN CITY, before so many other so called raw/gritty/adult comics of the 90's and 2000's there was BLACK KISS- Howard Chaykin's seminal (pun intended) excursion into dark side of LA life Underworld- with a few very twisty twists.

Taking equal parts from the hard-boiled crime fiction of Jim Thompson, David Goodis and James Ellroy Roman-Noir, horror-thrillers and hardcore porn; BLACK KISS was Chaykin's way of truly shunning and unburdening himself from the weight of mainstream and a sort of "mainstream-indy" comics publishing scene that was already beginning to calcify in the late 1980s. Companies like Pacific, First, Renegade, Eclipse and Dark Horse were still unwilling to truly push boundaries, continuing to publish safe (but truly well made) books like Jon Sable, Nexus, Flaming Carrot, etc.

It took a small Canadian visionary to have the moxie to publish Chaykin's sequential grab to the crotch and blow to the solar plexus of staid comicdom. Bill Marks' Vortex Comics imprint- having had successes with its self-named anthology, critically acclaimed MR. X, Those Annoying Post Bros. and Yummy Fur, Mark's Vortex was the perfect place for Chaykin to kick some finally deserved ass.

To quote Matt Fraction from his review of BLACK KISS on ARTBOMB.NET;

"Think Brian De Palma without the goddamn MPAA standing in the way of the distribution of his films making a film about filmmakers and their toady little fans. You may come close to imagining the no-holes-barred vitriol of Howard Chaykin's poison pen and final fuck you to comics, BLACK KISS."

It was in fact a FUCK YOU to comics back then in 1988. Chaykin had had enough of the self-imposed gutless confines of what was the US comic book industry. He also is on record as having had, at the time, enough of the intellectually, emotionally and sexually illiterati of late 80's fanboy-dom- both of these factors causing a rise in ol' Howie gave him the chutzpah and determination to make a series that was both tense, witty, dangerous, sexual and funny- a series that by all conventional wisdom was doomed to be unsold.

Thank God he didn't go by the prevailing wisdom. BLACK KISS was and is a ride down the dark, venal and unflinchingly amoral world of dugs, sex clubs, corrupt cops and a few vampires for spice. Characters run circles around each other- steal from one another, commit sexual/gender gymnastics and ultimately, things go from bad to worse for all of them- particularly our "hero": jazz & heroin fatality/mensch Cass Pollack- a sort of idealized Jim Thompson-loser version of the many Chaykin-style heroes we' had come to expect since AMERICAN FLAGG!.

I'm not going to explain or give away more of the characters or plot- it's too much fun discovering them on yer own.

I forgot to bloerrerrg this last month. My friends, Mike and Sara were married the Saturday before Halloween. It was a big news story here in Burlington, VT because the entire wedding was a Halloween costume wedding. Teh ceremony, presided over by Unitarian minister Roddy Cleary, was held at the Merrill's ROXY Cinema in an actual screen room! Lots of fun- lots of love, etc. and lots of Italian food at Winooski restaurant, PAPA FRANKS.


	They even got news coverage by WCAX CH3 and SEVENDAYS. WOO HOO!

On Visit to France, Donald Rumsfeld Hit with Lawsuit for Ordering, Authorizing Torture

The complaint was filed with the Paris prosecutor’s office as Rumsfeld arrived in France for a visit. This is the fifth time Rumsfeld has been charged with direct involvement in torture since 9/11. We speak with two attorneys with the plaintiffs -- Center for Constitutional Rights president Michael Ratner and Jeanne Sulzer of the International Federation of Human Rights. [includes rush transcript] U.S. and European human rights groups filed a lawsuit in France today charging former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with ordering and authorizing torture. The plaintiffs include the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights and the Paris-based International Federation of Human Rights. They say Rumsfeld authorized interrogation techniques that led to abuses at US-run prisons in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.

The complaint was filed with the Paris prosecutor’s office as Rumsfeld arrived in France for a visit. This is the fifth time Rumsfeld has been charged with direct involvement in torture since 9/11. Michael Ratner is the president of the Center for Constitutional Rights. He joins me in the firehouse studio. Jeanne Sulzer is a French attorney with the International Federation of Human Rights. One of my top 20 fave films and one of my favorite Godard films as well.

"Alphaville is science fiction without special effects. Godard couldn’t afford them in 1965 or ever, but he probably wouldn’t have wanted them even if he’d had unlimited financing. His whole theme, imagination versus logic, is consistent with his deployment of Paris as it was in the ’60s—or at least, those portions of Paris which struck Godard as architectural nightmares of impersonality. Sub-Nabokovian jokes on brand names abound. There is much talk of societies in other galaxies, but their only manifestation is the Ford Galaxy that Eddie Constantine’s Lemmy Caution (a low-rent French version of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe) moves about in. Most of Alphaville is nocturnal or claustrophobically indoors. Yet there is an exhilarating release in many of the images and camera movements because of Godard’s uncanny ability to evoke privileged moments from many movies of the past."

How D'Israeli Drew Leviathan (Or, Drawing Comics from Scratch on Computer)

This morning i found this terrific "how i do it" article on the blog of UK comic book arteest, Matt Brooker, AKA, D'ISRAELI (his website is cool too). In it you'll find out how Matt draws comic pages on his graphics tablet. I'm not necessarily in favor of either traditional or digital comic creation- I just figure whatever works. What's really cool about this tutorial is Matt's clear writing about why and how he does the various steps, etc. through to the finished product. And hey- also check out D'Freebies of D'Israeli- brooker's resource files for comic book artists: swatches, tool presets, thumbnail and page grids for comic page formatting. Thanks Matt!

After it happened I ran to get my Sven Hoek storyboard and changed a whole scene to make it more intense and real. That's what real life events are for! Many of them are much crazier than anything you can imagine in a cartoon, so I take advantage of them when they happen."

Dion has some nice tutorials at his website explaining how he combined traditional stop motion elements with digital imagery. If it doesn't ruin the magic for you to look behind the curtain, it will certainly give you a greater appreciation of the Art that went into this unusual film. I'd recommend a peek."
